Air Transport in the 21st Century

Air Transport in the 21st Century Review

Airlines are buffeted by fluctuating political and economic landscapes, ever-changing competition, technology developments, globalization, increasing deregulation and evolving customer requirements. As a consequence all sectors of the air transport industry are in a constant state of flux. The principle aim of this book is to review current trends in the airline industry and its related suppliers, thereby providing an insight into the forces that are changing its dynamics. The factors that are reshaping the structure of the industry are examined with a view to identifying the key issues whose impact will be critical in the future. The book features two very distinct sections. The first contains short contributions from industry executives at CEO/VP level from airlines, aircraft/engine manufacturers, safety and navigational provider organisations, who have set out their take of where the airline industry is heading. This commercial input sets the scene for the book and provides the bridge to the second section, which is composed of 15 chapters written by distinguished academic authors. Each chapter presents a valuable insight into a specific area of the air transport industry, including: airlines, airports, cargo, deregulation, the environment, navigation, strategy, information technology, security and tourism. The shared objective of the authors is to describe and explain the core competencies that are determining the current shape of the industry and to examine the forces that will change its direction going forward. The book is written in a management style and will appeal to all levels of personnel who work for airlines across the world. It is also written for airport authorities, aerospace manufacturers, regulatory and government transportation agencies, researchers and students of aviation management, transport studies, tourism and the wider air transport industry.

Implementation and assessment of hydrodynamic, salt and heat transport models: The case of Ria de Aveiro Lagoon (Portugal) [An article from: Environmental Modelling and Software]

Implementation and assessment of hydrodynamic, salt and heat transport models: The case of Ria de Aveiro Lagoon (Portugal) [An article from: Environmental Modelling and Software] Review

This digital document is a journal article from Environmental Modelling and Software, published by Elsevier in . The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Ria de Aveiro is a shallow coastal lagoon located in the Northwest coast of Portugal. The implementation and the assessment (calibration and validation) of the hydrodynamic, salt and heat transport models for Ria de Aveiro lagoon is presented. During the calibration the models parameters were adjusted to give the best fit of the model results to the field data. The hydrodynamic model calibration was carried out by comparing measured and predicted time series of sea surface elevation for 22 stations. The root-mean square of the difference between those values was determined and harmonic analysis was performed in order to evaluate the model ability to reproduce the tide propagation along the main channels of Ria de Aveiro. Validation of the hydrodynamic model was performed comparing measured and predicted sea surface elevation values for 11 stations, as well as velocities in the main flow direction for 10 stations and water flows for 6 stations. The salt and the heat transport models were calibrated comparing measured and predicted time series of salinity and water temperature for 7 stations. These models were validated comparing the model results with an independent field data set. Results indicate that the hydrodynamic, the salt and the heat transport models for Ria de Aveiro were successfully calibrated and validated.

Barriers to Sustainable Transport: Institutions, Regulation and Sustainability (Transport, Development and Sustainability Series)

Barriers to Sustainable Transport: Institutions, Regulation and Sustainability (Transport, Development and Sustainability Series) Review

The complexity of transportation systems and their negative social and environmental effects are today at the centre of attention. This book focuses on the impact of institutions and regulatory systems on transport systems and travel behaviour. While institutions appear to play an important role in the economic success of many countries, this book considers the extent to which they also support sustainable development.

Public Transport and its Users (Transport and Society)

Public Transport and its Users (Transport and Society) Review

Public transport is essential to the quality of life of its passengers, both as a means to move around but also to achieve a sustainable environment. However, the passenger's position as a customer is weakened by the dominance of monopolies, regulation and political influence in our public transport systems. This book is one of the first to examine strategies for the representation of user interests in public transport from a variety of perspectives. The authors review approaches to integrating the passengers' views in the planning process and to protecting their interests in operations and customer care across a range of European countries, including Austria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and EU policies. The book presents the conclusions of this research and examples of good practice. In this respect it will provide useful guidance for policy makers, stakeholder organizations and planners, as well as transport researchers.

AIRLINE EXECUTIVES FEDERAL REGULATION: CASE STUDIES IN AMERICAN ENTERPRISE FROM (Historical Perspectives on Business Enterprise Series)

AIRLINE EXECUTIVES FEDERAL REGULATION: CASE STUDIES IN AMERICAN ENTERPRISE FROM (Historical Perspectives on Business Enterprise Series) Review

This book is a collection of eight case studies of relationships between airline executives and federal regulatory agencies from the passage of the Air Commerce Act in 1926 to the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978. By focusing on the lives and personalities of individual entrepreneurs, W. David Lewis and his contributors hope to explore the interaction between technology, government regulation, and entrepreneurship.

Each essay in the book focuses on a particular airline executive, such as Eddie Rickenbacker, Robert Six, and Donald Nyrop. Lewis has been careful to give a variety of perspectives: Airlines of various types are representedlarge and small, scheduled and unscheduled. Some of the executives profiled were known for having adversative relationships with federal regulators, whereas others wholeheartedly accepted regulation and thrived under it.

There have been public calls for a return to airline regulation, and Lewis thinks it is not inconceivable that regulation may ultimately return if problems continue and conditions deteriorate further. But, he says, it is well to remember that deregulation occurred because there were flaws in the regulatory system it replaced. This collection of essaysscholarly and well documented but written in a lively style suitable for specialists and nonspecialists alikeprovides a long-range perspective on the issue of airline deregulation.

Scheduling of road vehicles in sugarcane transport: A case study at an Australian sugar mill [An article from: European Journal of Operational Research]

Scheduling of road vehicles in sugarcane transport: A case study at an Australian sugar mill [An article from: European Journal of Operational Research] Review

This digital document is a journal article from European Journal of Operational Research, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Pressure to remain internationally competitive has forced Australian sugar mills to reduce capital and operational costs. Improved scheduling of road transport vehicles provides one such opportunity, as it would reduce vehicle queue and mill idle times and hence the number of vehicles needed. It is difficult for mill traffic officers to produce good transport schedules manually due to the need to service a large number of harvesters in different locations. To address this issue, research was undertaken participatively with a sugar milling company in Australia to produce and implement a mixed integer programming model that represents the road transport operations. Two meta-heuristics were applied to find a solution to the model, leading to potential cost savings of AU0,000 per year versus schedules produced manually by the mill traffic officer. The model was also applied to explore regional planning options for a more integrated harvesting and transport system.
